Memphis Botanic Garden acquires young “Corpse Flower” named Hank!
For Immediate Release: The Memphis Botanic Garden is excited to announce the arrival of "Hank: an Amorphophallus titanium (Titan Arem), or, as more commonly known - "Corpse Flower:. Hank is only two years old and will needto mature to at least seven years of age before blooming for the first time. After that, with luck, he will re-bloom every three years or so.

Interest in the corpse flower comes from its size - it is the largest unbranched inflorescence (flower) in the plant kingdom, powerful stink, and fleeting presence. Referred to as the corpse flower or stinky plant, its putrid smell is most potent during peak bloom at night into the early morning. The odor of the flower attracts carrion flies that help pollinate it.

The corpse flower does not have an annual blooming cycle. The bloom emerges from, and energy is stored in, a huge underground stem called a "corm." The plant blooms only when sufficient energy is accumulated, making time between flowering unpredictable, spanning from a few years to more than a decade. It requires very special conditions, including warm day and night temperatures and high humidity, making botanic gardens like ours well suited to support this strange plant outside of its natural range. While not normally on public display as we nurture his growth, Hank will be available for viewing in our Visitor Center beginning Tuesday, May 1st for only one week.

This plant is native to the tropical rainforests of Sumatra, Indonesia, and first became known to science in 1878 and to the United States in the 1930’s. In its natural habitat, the corpse flower can grow up to 12 feet tall. Hank currently is about 4 feet tall, having doubled in size since the Memphis Botanic Garden acquired it some months ago.
Location: Memphis Botanic Garden 750 Cherry Road, Memphis, TN 38117
Website: http://memphisbotanicgarden.com

Target Bloom Date: est. May 2025!

Memphis Hort Society - Collecting Rare Plants
Dr. Victor Maddox, a Senior Research Associate at Mississippi State University, has had a lifelong fascination with plants that have inspired him to collect thousands of specimens from all over the globe. His collection is housed on 9 acres near Maben, MS and includes both outdoor plants and several greenhouses.

Dr. Maddox holds a bachelor’s degree in horticulture with a minor in botany from Southeast Missouri State University, a master’s degree from MSU in agronomy and a doctorate from MSU in agronomy specializing in turf and native grasses, with a minor in plant taxonomy. During college, he managed a private university collection of about 7,000 hybrid orchids, some dating to the 1940s. Now he manages his personal collection. The collection is arranged thematically with Old World plants from Africa, Asia, Australia and Europe in front of the house. The backyard has plants from the New World — North and South America.

Dr. Maddox is regarded as the premier plant taxonomist in the Southeastern United States. Join us for this evening with Dr. Maddox to learn about his life’s work and passion for plants.

Herbal Work Study: Sugars and Salts
8:00 am sign in.
The first two hours will be spent weeding, grooming, thinning, planting, or whatever else needs doing in the Herb Garden. The last hour will be spent learning about herbs: making and using Sugars and Salts. I will have cold water and bug spray available, you bring your favorite hand tools for weeding and grooming (soil knives, Cape Cod weeders, old kitchen knives, trowels, pruners, gloves, etc. – no hoes or rakes needed, though). If you want to actually participate in the sugars and salts class (instead of just watching), please bring the following: two sandwich baggies with ½ cup of sugar in one, and ½ cup salt in the other, a bowl or cup big enough to hold the sugar and salt, a cutting board, knife, extra sandwich size baggies, and plastic grocery bags. Everyone will get to go home with a handout that includes tips and recipes. Please arrive at the Horticulture Building in the south end of the parking lot between 8:00 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. The group will leave the building promptly at 8:30 a.m. Please dress appropriately: sun hats and closed toe shoes are suggested. Please note: this learning opportunity is “purchased” via a barter system: you must work the first two hours (8:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.) to attend the last hour of class (10:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.), making this a free event!).
