Memphis Horticultural Society Meeting - Epimediums: Jewels of the Shade with Karen Perkins
Known by many as a simple ground cover for dry woodland shade, Epimediums are finally getting the appreciation that they deserve. This “perfect shade perennial” possesses a delicate beauty that belies its surprisingly tough, long-lasting nature.

Karen Perkins will illustrate the many and varied types now commercially available, including some of the exciting new evergreen species from China. Characteristics, growth habit, growing and propagation, pests and diseases, and combining Epimediums with other shade perennials in the garden will also be addressed.

Karen graduated from Cornell University with a B.S. in Floriculture and Ornamental Horticulture and from the University of Delaware with a Master of Science in Public Garden Management. She has worked/interned at several botanic gardens including the Cornell Plantations, Longwood Gardens, the Arboretum at Flagstaff, Royal Botanic Gardens – Kew, England and Royal Botanic Gardens – Edinburgh, Scotland. She served in the Education Department of the Tower Hill Botanic Garden in Boylston, MA for 17 years. Karen is currently the owner of Garden Visions Epimediums, a Massachusetts-based mail order nursery offering over 170 species and varieties of epimediums along with other choice companion shade perennials.

Most Garden Vision Epimedium sales are through their catalog, which usually comes out in February-March, and is available on their website www.epimediums.com. They also sell at various plant sales throughout the Northeast.

Please join us to learn more about epimediums – an indispensable plant for your shade garden!

The Art of Bonsai
The world of Arts takes many forms. One such form is called a "Living Art" because the subject is alive and evolves as it grows. This Living Art is called "Bonsai" and the subjects are trees and shrubs which, while young, mimic old trees, some of which have survived over the years under stressful conditions causing them to take on unusual forms, which can be pleasing to the eyes.

Come learn about this Living Art form with MBG volunteer Fred Nowak. Bring a sack lunch or enjoy a box lunch from Fratelli’s in the Garden.

Elmwood Cemetery - Cradle Gardening - Information and Sign up meeting
Information and sign up meeting. Elmwood invites local gardeners to participate in the inaugural year of Cradle Gardening in the cemetery. If you love Elmwood Cemetery and are passionate about gardening, then this program is for you. Help bring flowers back to the oldest active garden-style cemetery in Memphis!
What are cradles? These oblong-shaped marble 'flower beds' were installed by the hundreds many years ago. They've remained empty for a century, in some cases.
We'll get started at 9 am! At this meeting, Elmwood staff and volunteers will capture your information and assign specifically-selected cradles to you. Gardeners will be welcome to begin as soon as they like.
To participate in this program, Elmwood highly recommends partnering with 1 or 2 of your trusted gardening friends, sharing the responsibility of an assigned area. There is no fee to participate in this volunteer-based program. Volunteers will be required to donate plants and use personal supplies.

Please email kim@elmwoodcemetery.org to save your seat at this meeting.

Elmwood Cemetery can only accept a limited number of volunteer gardeners this year.

Mid South Hosta Society: Tom Pellett, Artist and Garden Designer Surveys His Creations
The Rock Star of Memphis Garden Designers is going home to South Carolina. Tom Pellett’s final lecture as a Memphian will occur Thursday March 21 at 7:00 PM to the Mid-South Hosta Society. His designs have graced Dixon Gallery and Gardens, The Memphis Botanic Garden and many private homes throughout our region. Rather understated and modest, Tom planned gardens with gardeners as he wanted to help them have the garden they dreamed of, not to impose one on them. His plant knowledge seemed boundless as he exercised his craft in garden design using more than three dimensions. After all, gardening taps the fourth dimension of time. Tom is an artist in two dimensions as well, sketching and painting gardens, people, and architecture locally and on his travels.

Come hear this much beloved man as he surveys his time in Memphis since 1983 and says good-bye to a multitude of garden lovers and artistic friends.

Refreshment are at 6:30 p.m. Visitors are welcome.

Mid-South Hydrangea Society - Longwood Gardens: A World of Garden within One with Karl Gercens
Karl Gercens started his interest at an early age while growing up on a 10,000-acre cotton plantation in Mississippi and developed a lifelong love of horticulture. The warm Mississippi climate and long growing season helped to nurture his fondness for plants and his appreciation for the wonders of natural beauty. Karl’s experimentation with different plant types and growing methods in that region sparked an interest in new & dynamic exploration for cultivation, which ultimately led to his B.S. in Ornamental Horticulture at Mississippi State University. He completed academic internships at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida and at the Filoli Estate in San Francisco Bay area.
Karl will speak on some recent innovations at Longwood Gardens along with new hydrangea cultivar additions to the conservatory display from Holland and England as well as some opposite season garden inspiration from South Africa and New Zealand. Karl traveled throughout the world in 2018 capturing hydrangea and garden images that he will share with us during his presentation. We will follow in his footsteps to beautiful and fantastic public and private gardens from which he draws inspiration for his eye-popping conservatory displays at Longwood.
