March is officially here! This time of year, I immediately start thinking about spring and warmer weather. The truth is February seemed more like spring than winter. Gardeners are ready to get their hands dirty. Before you start designing that landscape, stop by the Shelby County Extension office and see what we have to offer in the way of gardening publications. You can also help us celebrate Extension Month!
Extension is more than just a place where you can get gardening information. There are other programs within Extension that you probably didn’t know about. There is Family and Consumer Science (FCS), Tennessee 4-H Youth Development and Agriculture and Natural Resources Community Economics. Let’s take a quick look at these programs.
Agriculture, Natural Resources & Community Economics (ANR & CE) is a good source of educational programs and information about Agriculture, Natural Resources and Food Systems. This program assists Tennesseans in achieving their goals of profit in agriculture, abundant and safe food, a clean environment and effective stewardship of natural resources.
Tennessee 4-H Youth Development is a program that most people are familiar with. 4-H is a unique program for boys and girls in elementary through high school. It encourages diverse groups of youth to develop their skills and talents to the fullest. As 4-H’ers, youth actively participate in activities, events and projects that develop and strengthen life skills. 4-H is open to everyone. You “Learn by doing”.
Family & Consumer Science (FCS) uses research-based education to help Tennesseans gain knowledge and develop confidence in making good decisions. Success is in helping consumers improve their well-being which results in economic benefits for individuals, families and communities.
To learn more about these programs come out and meet your local county agents at the Spring Fling event which is hosted by the Memphis Area Master Gardeners. Join us on March 17th and 18th from 9 am to 5 pm at the Agricenter Red Barn. Our agents representing their program areas will be manning tables. We will be more than happy to assist you!
