This 1912 Victorian cottage with a wrap-around porch would be a great movie location for a turn-of-the-century Southern tale. Four old oak trees form the upper canopy, with many species of native and non-native small trees and shrubs layering down to the water lilies and rough canna in the koi pond, providing year-round color and bird habitat. Deep beds extend to the sidewalks to complement the hell strip planted with perennial flowers. What looks like a sculpture nestled in a garden bed is actually a part of a jet engine. The sunny corner patio is surrounded by raised beds for berries and sun-loving flowering plants. Click the icon below to view the Plant List

People stop by to tell this gardener how much they enjoy her yard, and she even gets notes left on her door when she is not present. Perhaps it is because this garden has it all, appealing to everyone while supporting habitat for pollinators, insects, and other wildlife. Organized as a series of garden rooms, you will find pollinator habitat, food production including eggs, honey, kiwi, pomegranate, berries, and assorted vegetables, as well as several fairy gardens hidden throughout the landscape. There is a little library and an elf house that children can visit, where the elf leaves trinkets for visitors. When it is time to relax, a deck and patio provide space for entertaining, along with multiple small water features. The home is powered by 17 solar panels that back up a solar generator. Eight years ago, this was a neglected rental property. The garden consisted of bare dirt, a dilapidated metal shed, and trees that had to be removed. Filled with new hardscape projects and plantings from their past homes and parents’ gardens, this DIY garden is a size that turns maintenance and projects into a hobby instead of a chore. A bespoke fence mural painted by their daughter, a copper pipe arbor, a covered patio connected to a deck by paver and boardwalk pathways, and a bubbling fountain enhance the renewal of this property into a quiet, tranquil oasis in the middle of Midtown. Sheared hedges and boxwoods give a formal first impression; however, daily use is anything but. The front lawn is used for everything from ball sports to slip n’ slides. A massing of colonnade hollies obscures a spot of sunlight and the cutting garden that supplies fresh flowers for the home. In the courtyard, the sound of a fountain creates a comforting calm while also serving as the social hub for both human visitors and resident birds. A pair of human-sized garden sculptures celebrates the spiritual connection between humanity and nature. In a more natural area, a butterfly garden supports butterflies from larvae to adulthood. All of this gardening takes place amid the challenges of surface runoff from neighbors. Click the icon below to view the Plant List.

An oasis of calming charm nestled in a true city setting brings welcome relief from the noise of trucks and trains that pass nearby. Old-growth trees damaged by time and storms are changing light conditions in this garden, which has been shared by four generations of the same family. You will be enchanted by this unique Southern cottage garden, which features a two-story aviary that now serves as an alfresco tea room. A koi pond and other garden rooms add to the sense of enchantment. Special planters throughout the garden each have a story to tell in this historic landscape. The wonderful displays even spill out into the street median, which your host has planted with wildflowers. Click the icon below to view the Plant List.

How do Master Gardeners meet the challenges in their own gardens? Memphis Area Master Gardeners invite the public to “Through Our Garden Gates” to their personal gardens where they have solved drainage problems, fought weeds, built water features, selected plants for sun and shade, maximized small spaces, and made large spaces more intimate.

Garden hosts are on-site at each garden throughout the day to answer visitor’s questions and to provide plant lists. In addition, each garden will feature presentations by experts on weed control, shade plants, tree care, and other topics. There is an “Ask A Master Gardener” plant clinic available at one of the locations.

Gardens and landscapes have long been the inspiration for creating art. Honoring this tradition the tour will feature Plein Air Memphis artists working on site to capture the beauty and spirit of each garden.

Beautiful Gardens, Plant Experts, and Plein Air Artists,.

Open to the public, free of charge (donations accepted)

Each of our gardens has a distinct personality and special features that make each garden a joy to behold. While all are different they are all beautiful and it will be hard to choose your favorite.
