Be Thankful for Those Leaves This Fall

The Thanksgiving holiday is right around the corner. This time of year reminds me of raking leaves at my parentsโ€™ home. It would take us all day, and we would haul bag after bag to the curb for the garbage men to carry away. As an Extension Agent, I have learned a better way to utilize fallen leaves. Instead of raking them, mulch them!

Research from Michigan State University reveals that mulching leaves and returning them to the soil is of immense benefit. However, this must be done properly.

It is best to mow when a thin layer of leaves begins to collect on the turf. The leaves are chopped by the mower and settle into the soil, returning valuable nutrients. While this may require more frequent mowing, it is preferable to spending hours with a rake.

Additionally, research indicates that up to six inches of leaves can be successfully mulched without harming the lawn. That does not mean you should wait until they accumulate to that depth!

Shredded leaves decompose faster than whole leaves, creating natural compost that promotes healthy turf growth. They also help conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

So, this fall, put that rake away! All you need is your lawn mower to shred the leaves and recycle them right where they fall. Gone are the days of hauling heavy bags of leaves to the curb. This method instead provides nutrients vital to the soil.
