Festive Holiday Poinsettias

The holiday season is here! When thinking of decorating for the holiday season, poinsettias immediately come to mind. These plants can be found in garden centers, floral shops and nurseries around town this time of year. My parents usually rush out after Thanksgiving and purchase poinsettias to adorn the area around their fireplace. It is a remarkable sight!

Poinsettias are native to Mexico. They add beauty and color to the interior of homes during the holiday season. They come in many colors. There is of course the traditional red, but also pink, white and marbled color. The colored parts of poinsettias are not flowers but bracts (modified leaves). The flowers are yellow in color and located in the center of the bracts.

In order to maintain the appearance and longevity of poinsettias, proper care is required. Poinsettias should be placed in an area with bright, but not direct, natural sunlight. Avoid placing the plants near heat vents or cold, drafty windows. The ideal room temperature for growing poinsettias is between 65 and 70 degrees F.

It is best to water poinsettias when the soil feels dry. Water thoroughly but do not allow them to sit in a water-filled saucer. To thrive it is essential the plant be in a pot that drains freely.

It is not necessary to fertilize poinsettias when they are in bloom. The plants can be fertilized when you see new growth. It is best to fertilize with an all-purpose fertilizer at half the recommended strength. With proper care, poinsettias can last six to eight weeks in your home.

Enjoy vibrant poinsettias this holiday season! If you have any questions about caring for your poinsettias, please give me a call at 901-752-1207. I am happy to assist you!

Wishing you and your family a happy holiday season!
