Monthly Garden Tasks Guide

Stay on track with essential gardening activities for this month, including planting, pruning, lawn care, and seasonal maintenance tasks.

Plant

Order seeds.  Start seeds for cool-weather vegetables.  As long as the ground is not frozen, you can continue to plant new trees and shrubs.

Lawn Care

Apply lime if a soil test indicates it is needed.  Spot-spray winter weeds.

Fertilize

Trees, winter annuals.

Prune

Broadleaf evergreen shrubs. Deadhead winter annuals.

Other

Obtain soil test.  Spray dormant oil on broadleaf evergreens and roses. Test germination on garden seeds remaining from prior years. Continue to keep the leaves off your lawn. Repair and sharpen mowers and tools.

Learn

Attend Bartlett Gardening University Saturdays at 2:30 PM, Bartlett Library, 5884 Stage Road. Six sessions 1/17, 24, 31/2026 and 2/7, 14, 28/2026

Volunteer to open your garden to the public to view for one day as part of the six-week citywide garden walk. The aim is to create a celebratory atmosphere, educate, and inspire visitors to make their own outdoor spaces beautiful. Go to experiencememphisgardens.org to sign up.
