Clematis (Clematis spp.) is a diverse group of flowering vines prized for their ability to add vertical interest, long bloom seasons, and a wide range of flower shapes and colors. They thrive in well-drained soil with sunny tops and shaded roots, and are ideal for trellises, arbors, containers, and garden borders in Zone 8.

Clematis Groups

Group 1 – Early Bloomers (Old Wood) – Low maintenance

Spring-flowering varieties that bloom on last year’s growth. Minimal pruning required. Often delicate, smaller flowers and very early color.

Group 2 – Large-Flowered Hybrids (Repeat Bloomers) – Needs care

Produce large, showy blooms in late spring and again in summer. Require light pruning and some protection from intense heat.

Group 3 – Late Bloomers (New Wood) – Most reliable in heat

Bloom in summer to fall on new growth. These are the easiest to grow and prune (cut back hard annually), making them ideal for warmer climates like Zone 8.
