Recently the Mid-South experienced several days of frigid temperatures. Winter Storm Enzo brought snow to parts of the Gulf Coast resulting in historic snowfall totals from New Orleans to Florida. It was amazing! Be careful when working outside in your garden during periods of cold weather. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has documented that, annually, there are more deaths in the United States due to extreme cold than extreme heat.
Each of us responds to cold weather and temperature extremes differently. Factors that can affect a person’s susceptibility to cold temperatures are exhaustion, becoming wet, high blood pressure and poor physical condition. Be mindful of these factors while performing tasks in the garden during cold weather.
It is always best to let others know when you will be working outside in extreme cold. Dress in layers so clothing may be added or taken off. Keep yourself and your clothes dry. Be sure to protect your ears, face, hands, feet, and head during extreme cold. If you are going to take breaks, do so in warm locations and always stay hydrated. This is just as important in cold weather as it is in hot weather.
Before you leave the house to cover plants to protect them from freezing, make sure you are adequately protected. Cold weather injuries can be prevented. Although we may have some warm days this month, remember it is still winter! We may not be finished with the cold weather just yet. If you have any questions, please give me a call at 901-752-1207.
