Spring has sprung! Trees are leafing out, turfgrasses are greening up, azaleas are in full bloom, and perennials are pushing their way out of the ground. There is nothing quite like spring in the Mid-South.

Spring also brings a variety of local plant sales at Memphis Botanic Garden, Lichterman Nature Center, and the Dixon. Master Gardener Associations are also hosting plant sales throughout West Tennessee and into North Mississippi. These events present excellent opportunities to find unique plants and support local organizations. But before you head out to make your purchases, what should you be looking for?

First, check the root health of the plants. Don’t be afraid to gently slip the plant out of its container to inspect the root ball. Healthy roots should be white, firm, and fibrous. If the roots are brown and mushy, it’s best to pass on that plant. Additionally, watch for excessive circling roots in the container. This can become a long-term problem, especially for shrubs and trees.

Next, inspect plants carefully for signs of diseases and insect pests. Look under the leaves and along the stems. If you notice any issues, avoid purchasing these, as they can introduce problems into your existing landscape.

Native plants are definitely having a moment. Be sure to do your homework when selecting them. According to the USDA, native plants are those that existed in the United States prior to European settlement. One of the biggest benefits of using native plants is that they help create habitat and provide food sources for birds and pollinators. They are often easier to grow and typically require less maintenance once established.
Choosing the right plants for your landscape takes thoughtful planning. Evaluate and understand your light conditions, consider having your soil tested, and think about which plants best fit your lifestyle and maintenance preferences.
