Things to Know Before Purchasing a Houseplant

Many experience great success growing plants outdoors. However, there are those who find growing plants indoors to be a bit of a struggle. There are several things to consider before you purchase a houseplant. One key element to success is selecting a plant that suits your environment. Wide varieties of houseplants are available but some require more care than others.

Choosing the right plant for your home is crucial to its success. It is important to be aware in what condition the plant will thrive. It would be better to purchase a plant that requires the same environmental conditions that exist in your home rather than trying to alter the environment to fit the plant.

Houseplants need the proper amount of light, water, humidity and fertilization to grow properly. Remember that sunlight is the primary factor in photosynthesis (the plant’s mechanism for producing its own energy and nourishment). Plants are considered to have high, medium or low light requirements. The intensity of light the plant receives depends on the direction of your windows. For example, too much sunlight can burn your plants; this is especially true during the summer months.

Overwatering is the primary reason indoor plants do not survive. The type of plant and its environmental conditions will determine the water needs of the plant. Sticking your index finger directly into the soil is a good way to check plant moisture. If that soil is damp, there is no need to water.

Some houseplants require higher humidity levels to thrive than others. You can increase humidity by purchasing a humidifier. Proper humidity levels can also be achieved by grouping your plants closely together. This will help retain the humidity your plants need.

Finally, houseplants need a sufficient amount of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K). Houseplant fertilizers can be purchased at your local nurseries and garden centers. As always, read and follow the label directions.

Developing an ideal environment for houseplants is essential to success! If you have any questions about houseplant care, please give me a call. We have two new publications about houseplant care that I will be happy to share with you.
