Monarch butterflies of the subspecies Danaus plexippus plexippus migrates annually in Eastern North America from as far north as Canada to the highlands of Mexico. From the counts taken in the overwintering grounds in Mexico, the population has suffered a d   dramatic decline from the peak of ~682,000,000 in 1997 to less than 25,000,000 in 2014 when concerned citizens began asking what they could do to help this beloved, beautiful insect.  Monarch Way Stations were created in response to help Monarchs on their journey and to let people see the Monarch life cycle up close.
